iPhone Apps That Save Money on your Cell Phone Bill

So I don’t know about you but a big part of our budget is our cell phones. And I try to limit the cost first by using texts instead of minutes. But of course I try to save there too by not having an unlimited plan and keeping my text messages in check with a limited texting plan. Here are two apps I use to help:

A coworker clued me in to this app. Each participant signs up for the app and then unlimited text messages are sent through your data plan, not your text message plan. The trick is getting people to buy into it but if you can, it will save both of you text messages.

HeyTell

I tried this app several months ago and it was awful! It was a faux-walkie-talkie system. The quality was bad and delayed. However, they’ve switched it up so your whole audio message is recorded and then sent at once to the recipient. You are alerted just like a text message that it’s there. Again, both parties have to sign up. I love this because there are many times I’m driving and can’t type a text message or it’s just too much to say. Or sometimes you just need someone to hear your tone of voice as well as the message. The girls and I love to just say “hey” all together when Scott is at work.

The Dave Ramsey Envelope System – 4 Month Review

So it’s been 4, almost 5, months since we started budgeting utilizing Dave Ramsey’s envelope system and 3 months since my last update. How’s it going?

Well, the envelopes are dead.

But not by choice. AND the budget is still alive and kicking.

About two months into using the cash/envelopes, which I LOVED, we had $100 disappear. I’m not going to speculate how it happened but the bottom line is the money never showed back up and I just couldn’t make myself risk it again. So for the past 2 months I’ve heavily relied on the Excel version of my budget as well as Mint.com to track all of our expenses but especially our envelope money. I log on nearly every day and, yes, manually enter how much we’ve spent. And I have to say, I like it. Yes, cash holds you much more accountable but doing it this way relieves all the headache of shuffling money around when you’re caught without your envelopes.

What I love is that budgeting has nearly curbed our frivolous spending. I mean, really. Sometimes I go all week without spending my blow money and now that I think of it, Scott hasn’t even asked about his in a few weeks. I didn’t buy ANY clothes for anyone in January. We had money left in our entertainment budget even though we went to the circus. We’re eating in much more and while I know I could save more money grocery shopping with coupons, we’re staying within our budgeted amount. By saving in these categories, we’re able to use the extra for things like unexpected doctor bills, pharmacy bills and guitars that aren’t in the budget without ever having to touch our emergency fund. I guess what I’m saying is I LOVE our budget and I really don’t know if I could or would ever live without one again.

In closing, I know I’ve plugged this book before but if you still haven’t checked out Jon Acuff’s new book Gazelles, Baby Steps and 37 Other Things Dave Ramsey Taught Me About Debt you should. If you are a Dave Ramsey-er it’s a must read.

Budget – Envelope System Update

I’m sure you’re waiting on pins and needles on an update about our envelope system. I mean we HAVE been on it for a full pay cycle of 2 weeks now + the 1 week test run. You’re excited, RIGHT?!

Well, you should be because it’s going SPLENDIDLY. Splendidly, I tell you. We stayed under budget for both the test run and the full 2 week cycle. In fact, in all 3 weeks, we came $30 under in groceries, my most feared category, EACH week.

I can’t tell you how nice it is to open my Mint.com account and only see 2 red lines (thanks to extra Charity (yay) and pharmacy (boo)). Usually by mid-month, the budget was shot and it was difficult to find a green line. I mean, seriously, all the rumors are true…we finally know where our money is going instead of where it went! It’s amazing! We already have money set aside for our car taxes next spring for crying out loud. It’s fantastic!

All of that to say it hasn’t been complete smooth-sailing. There have been a few times we’ve been caught out without our cash and then we’re left juggling cash around envelopes after using our debit card. Scott is more of the spender than me (really) and he’s stomped his foot and lowered his bottom lip a few times when I’ve had to say, it’s not really in the budget. I can’t say I haven’t been disappointed just in the last two weeks not being able to spend like I want (fingernail polish or fall decorations, anyone?) but in hindsight it feels really good to have stuck to my guns.

We have made a few changes. There are a few categories that Dave recommends we use for envelopes like gas or vacation that is just too inconvenient or silly to keep in envelopes. So far, I’ve kept other things super divided. Food is our sore spot so I have separate envelopes for groceries, fast food, sit-down restaurants and coffee. I know it seems like a lot but knowing ahead of time it is our weakness, we are better able to keep an eye on how many times we’re eating Taco Bell and how many times we’ve gotten coffee etc. with it like this.

Speaking of food, I still haven’t mastered weekly meal planning. I’m at the grocery store constantly, only thinking of dinner a day or two ahead of time but you know, we’re literally 3 minutes from the store and it’s just hasn’t been a big deal. It’s the only way I don’t completely stress over the whole thing. And you know they say the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. So I’m tackling this dinner thing bite by bite…or something like that.

So all in all, I really can not imagine not having this even just a few weeks in. All our needs are met, our wants are managed and we have flexibility to help others. Win, win, win!

Budgets: Meal Planning

I feel a little one-track minded these past few days. Is that even a phrase? I know someone can have a one-track mind but can they be one-track minded? OK, so I feel like I have a one-track mind lately. And it’s all budget, budget, budget. I’m not sure what I was thinking when I started a test-run of a budgeting system on a Friday. Um, hello Friday night-life, Saturday shopping and Sunday sales papers. Boo! But we did really, really well. Like, super well. I continued to say no to things but it felt really good to have a full envelope. As expected it is SUPER tough to spend cash. I haven’t even gotten Starbucks yet this week.

The hardest part though has been groceries. I think we have plenty budgeted but it’s hard to think about what to cook in advance and keep it under budget. And it’s hard when you’re in the store not to pick up other stuff. I mean, you have to think about food at least 3 times a day and much more with kids that require many snacks. Just when I get over one meal, I feel like the cycle starts all over again. Scott says I should plan for a week at a time and I know that’s what most meal-planners do but I just can’t yet. I don’t know. Right now I’m going one day at a time. It seems grocery sales ads change at different times and my stock items at home are running out and I’m trying to plan around the kids’ meals at school and I just can’t plan a week in advance. To be honest, the whole thing is stressing me out a little. Can you tell? This is why for our entire married life I’ve always just cooked what I’ve wanted when I wanted and eaten out when I didn’t want to cook at all. But I can’t ignore the fact that we only spent $40 on food through an entire weekend, including a few staples we needed.

Also, I’m loving that our checkbook balance is not plummeting every time I log in. It’s good. I know it is. It’s just…I have to get better at this meal plan thing. Advice?

Envelope System Test Run

So we’re doing a test run of the budget/envelope system. We have 1 week before we officially start but I thought we’d do a week of a test run of envelopes with things like blow money, clothes and food in envelopes. Here’s what I’ve had to resist in just 24 hours:

Extra energy jelly beans for running/biking for me and Scott from the running store. ($10)
Anything at Old Navy. I feel compelled to buy something when I walk through the doors. (> $25)
Fall decorations and a blanket at Wal-mart. ($20)
Ice cream for me and the girls at the new TCBY that was recommended. ($10)
And how’s this for ironic: Zipper pouches to store our money in. ($34)

Now I probably wouldn’t have bought ALL of that but I sure did think about it. And that, my friends, is how our budget is blown every single month.

Groupon Gap Deal

Ok, so I know everyone and their brother with Groupon got this Gap coupon but I was SO excited how my purchase went I’ve been blabbering it all weekend and it’s not properly blabbered until it’s blogged.

So, first of all, if you’re not familiar with Groupon you haven’t been reading my blog you get to buy gift certificates to places for a discount price. A few weeks ago Gap did a nationwide Groupon and you got a $50 gift card for $25. Well, with Groupon you also get a $10 referral fee. I had one in my account so I only paid $15 for mine.

When I went in Saturday I was immediately drawn to the back of the store when ALL their dress pants were $35! After trying on several pair I settled on these Trouser pants.

I needed to get to my $50 gift card value though. Well, if you know Gap, they don’t have a whole lot of stuff for $15. I managed to find a T-shirt for $19.

When I went to ring up, my total was EXACTLY $50. Turns out the shirt was on sale for $15. My Groupon code worked beautiful and I owed absolutely nothing (not even tax). Not to mention I did the entire gift card transaction from their iPhone app – no printing.

So I walked out of the store with $79 worth of merchandise I paid $15 oop for.

Now that’s something to blabber about.

CVS 101

Today I got a fantastic deal at CVS…I got $50 worth of stuff for $2. There’s something a little addictive about saving so much money. But the great thing is it’s not bad for you, in fact, it’s GREAT for you. I’ve been asked online and offline a few times how I do it. There are tons of web sites and now even in-person couponing classes you can take but I learned it nearly 3 years ago over at moneysavingmom.com. She has a fantastic tutorial here that should explain it all.

I decided to take a stab at explaining what I do on video for those that are adverse to reading. I’m not sure why you’re reading this if you are, but anyhoo. Now my stab at this is more like a stab with a safety pin than a butcher’s knife. I don’t do a great job. I didn’t have a script, the video is spliced and well, I just hope you get something out of it if you prefer videos over written tutorials.

I just know this CVS thing works and I want you to see that it’s doable. I have saved THOUSANDS of dollars over the past few years and I simply will not know what to do if I ever have to pay for toothpaste or a razor again. I spend no more than 1 hour a week on this and it is well worth my time.

Kohl’s Deal

I love good deals. No surprise there. Just had to tell you about this one I got at Kohl’s last night!

Yes, I paid $1.59 and saved $71! Here’s what I got:

Yes, very random (and mis-matched) stuff. I’d apologize for the unmentionables but they’re so cute and that’s what I got! I walked around with them wadded up in my hand in the store but yet I’ll put a picture of it on here. I don’t get it either.

ANYWAY, here’s how I did it:

A few weeks ago they had a really good deal on beach towels. Normally $22.99-$29.99, on sale for $7.99. So I bought EIGHT of them since we use them for the pool so much. I had a 15% coupon and THEN got back $10 in Kohl’s Cash for spending over $50. So I spent $54 for 8 towels. You can’t get half-decent beach towels at Wal-mart for that. That alone was a great deal.

Last night I used that $10 I earned and then another $5 coupon I got for signing up for their email to buy another towel, a belt, bra and underwear for $1.59. So between both purchases, I saved $200! Woot!

Top Ten Tuesday: Products I Refuse to Pay For

It’s no shock I love coupons. You may not be convinced that it’s worth the time but I thought I’d list out things that I haven’t paid for in over two years that I’ve been couponing. (Here’s one of my favorite deals) Also, here’s a peek into my closet space where I store these things. I like to call it my personal mini-CVS. This is just half the closet and I give away bags of free stuff regularly.

So here’s what I refuse to pay for these days…

Razors. Even the fancy battery operated, refill required ones.
Tylenol. Brand name!
Cold Medicine

Shampoo/conditioner

Cleaner (almost any kind…toilet,bleach spray, etc)

If I bought just one of each of those at full price, that list would total nearly $60! I’ll go ahead and plug moneysavingmom.com. I learned everything from Crystal! And the thing is, that doesn’t even touch the grocery store! That’s just health and beauty products from CVS! I get so excited; can you tell from the exclamation marks!?!

Blue Light Special

Ok, coupon queens, get ready! I’ve been couponing heavily at CVS for a year now and I was blown away by this one. K-Mart has a deal for a few days where you can double coupons up to $2! Glade also has a deal where you buy two plug-ins for $4.19 each, there is a B1G1 coupon and you get TWO $4 coupons back!! And I had 4 B1G1 coupons!

Everything in that picture is worth $135. I did 5 transactions rolling over my money to buy more of the Glade until the 5th I did everything else and paid with the money I earned. For each of the Glade transactions, I paid .78 and for the last transaction ith everything else, my total was $99 and I paid SIXTY THREE CENTS!!!!! AND had EIGHT DOLLARS LEFT! K-Mart PAID ME money to take all that home!

Real Hope for Haiti

Awhile back I blogged on Real Hope for Haiti. I never really did follow up on that though. I gave what was left in my PayPal account at the time, continued to read Aaron’s posts through the week and emptied my PayPal account a second time after a payment came in again and then tonight I read this post directly from the center and emptied it once more. My heart just breaks for these kids and I honestly don’t know what to do but pray and click that little donation button. I know the small amount of money I’m sending isn’t going to stop their pain tonight but maybe, just maybe, it will make a difference somewhere at some point.

Lord, please be with all the burn victims in Haiti right now. Help the swelling go down and the healing process to quicken. Be with the children’s families and the workers at the center now. Grant them mercy and grace and patience and courage and strength. Thank you for moving me to make a difference and I pray that my gifts are multiplied beyond recognition and used for Your glory.
