Homemade Hummus

Who knew making hummus was so easy?  I guess I didn’t.  And with an ingredient like Tahini, it scared me off a bit!  I had NO CLUE what it was and in fact, when I was at the store this morning I had to Google a picture just so I would have a clue where to look.  When I read it was ground sesame seeds, I headed for the spice/baking aisle.  No dice.  A clerk pointed me to where they have the almond butter and Nutella with the peanut butter.  And ouch, at $8.95 for a bottle, I was really doubting whether it would be worth it.

I picked out this recipe from The Barefoot Contessa.  As the comments suggest, it’s strong on the garlic, but it’s just what I love.  I haven’t done a side by side cost comparison but I’m guessing it’s a pretty big savings as you could actually get 8 batches from the one jar of Tahini.  And there are NO chemicals in this one!  It made quite a bit and with a few carrot sticks, it made for a nice snack or even quick lunch.

I’m looking forward to trying different spices.  Have you ever made hummus?  Have any recipes I should try?

I just had hummus for lunch today, but it was store-bought. I don’t like too much garlic (last time, I got garlic and artichoke flavor and I wasn’t a fan, so I got plain this time), especially if I’m eating it with carrots b/c the bitterness of the carrots with the garlic just turns me off for some reason. I like it better with pita bread or crackers. Anyway, I just thought that was coincidental that I had it for lunch, seeing as how it’s not a regular thing for me. :)

I love hummus, and make it quite a bit. It’s so easy! I don’t always use tahini either. Sometimes I just don’t want that sesame flavor. I tend to experiment a bit with ingredients, but here are some combos I have loved: garlic with red curry paste; spinach and garlic and parmesan, roasted red pepper with tahini and garlic. (You guessed it – I’m a garlic lover!) Hummus is so great with pita chips, veggies, on sandwiches, etc.

I ate a lot of hummus for a while when I was pregnant with Molly Ann. It was one thing I could tolerate.

When I was in culinary school and shortly after I made hummus a lot. I have no clue what recipe I used – I probably found something in a cooking magazine. You’ve probably found a great one from The Barefoot Contessa – I have yet to make anything of hers that isn’t wonderful.
